Stella Artois, more commonly known as “Wife Beater” or “Loopy Juice” is one of the world’s best selling beers, enjoyed in over 80 countries worldwide. It was first brewed at the “Den Hoorn” Brewery of Leuven Belgium way back in 1366 up until the present day. It is brewed in the UK by Interbrew UK. Stella has that one major quality in that if you drink enough of it makes you talk shite and then fall over. Instead of the catchphrase “Reassuringly Expensive” it should be “Reassuringly Twatted!” Most lagers on tap are a good 4% ABV whereas Stella is 5.2% ABV, the extra alcohol involved can have disastrous consequences! The beer itself is quite tasty and thirst quenching, like Carling for example, but it does have a sometimes overpowering hop taste which if you don’t like that sort of taste, can be off-putting. Stella is usually very gassy, which is probably a good thing as you will drink it more slowly! One of Stella’s major characteristics is not in the taste or quality of the beer itself, but in the price… a pint of Stella can cost upwards of 40p more than your average pint of Carling or Fosters for example. In restaurants it is even more expensive, where you would usually expect to pay around £3.00 a pint. Reassuringly expensive indeed. However the majority of “Premium” lagers do, as their title suggests, come at a premium price. On a blistering hot summers day a nice green bottle full of ice cold Stella can go a long way to quenching any thirst, but the same can be said for any ice cold beer of a similar quality. In my opinion, although sometimes the extra bit of alcohol can be nice, especially if you are only having one or two drinks, Stella is not at the top of my menu in terms of choices of drink, although it does rank highly in my list of favourite beers.
